Iowa Health and Wellness Plan (IHAWP)

What it Covers

If you get Medicaid, it will pay for a broad range of medical services. If you’re not sure if a particular service is covered by Medicaid, or if it requires prior authorization, ask your doctor or your Medicaid managed care program.

Here is a list of the main services that the Iowa Health and Wellness Plan (IHAWP) provides:

  • Doctor visits
  • Chiropractic care
  • Emergency room services
  • Ambulance services
  • Hospital services (inpatient and outpatient)
  • Rehabilitative services, including physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy
  • Labs and X-rays
  • Medical equipment and supplies
  • Pregnancy and postpartum services
  • Prescription drugs
  • Home health services
  • Hospice care
  • Dental care

For children under age 21, Medicaid also provides:

More Services For People with Disabilities

If you have a serious medical condition or a disability that makes it difficult to do activities of daily living (ADLs), you may be determined Medically Exempt and qualify for extra benefits, including:

  • Eyeglasses
  • Hearing aids
  • Non-emergency medical transportation
  • Other mental health services

Other long-term care services are only covered by disability-based Medicaid, including Medicaid waiver programs. If you have a disability, read DB101's disability-based Medicaid article or talk to your local Health and Human Services (HHS) office to see if you may qualify.
