Disability-Based Medicaid

What You Pay

People who get disability-based Medicaid usually don’t have to pay a monthly premium, except for some people who have Medicaid for Employed People with Disabilities (MEPD).

And if you have disability-based Medicaid, you usually do not need to pay anything for medical services: there are almost no copayments and no deductible.

Example

Dahlia has disability-based Medicaid and never has to pay a monthly premium. One hot day in early July, she feels sick and goes to the doctor. When she gets there, the doctor tells Dahlia that she has allergies and prescribes her a medication that will help her feel better.

With disability-based Medicaid, there are no copayments for doctor visits or prescription drugs, so Dahlia doesn't have to pay anything.

Note: Medicaid is much less expensive than other types of health insurance. Private insurance plans often have large copayments and annual deductibles, which means you have to pay thousands of dollars yourself before your insurance starts to cover services. If you qualify for Medicaid, you should sign up!
